Summer Recap

The Shaky Experience (Radio Show)

I made a flyer couple of months ago that read "Hello reader, I am interested in work for you. I'm good at marketing, but my passion is entertainment. Email me, thank you". I hung them up around Denver. As I was hanging one at the Auraria campus, I noticed they were having a small fair. That is when I discovered MET Media. I showed them my flyer and they admired my ambition and offered me to have my own radio show. I accepted and now have my own live radio show every Monday 1-2pm MST at Metropolitan State University.

I host The Shaky Experience (Show). I have completed 6 episodes and one teaser. I curate a list of bands that I want to play on my show every week. I do my best to make my show as interactive as possible by inviting listeners to let me know what they want to hear or if they have a topic they want covered and want to discuss on my show.

I emailed The Underground Music Showcase Festival about potentially having a representative come on my show to promote the festival before it's big weekend of July 27th - 30th. I got a response asking if I would be interested in interviewing Tobias Krause. He's a former MSU alumni and now is one of the lead people involved with UMS. I accepted, we set up a date and I had the absolute pleasure of interviewing him on the third episode of The Shay Experience which you can listen to it here.

Tobias and I discussed a large range of topics from what to except from the music festival to his love for the growing city of Denver. He originally went to MSU and was an editor for MET Media. He has a passion for reviewing local music and put all his efforts into his love for music. Denver's biggest newspaper, Westword asked him to work for them and setup their annual Westword Music Showcase. After that he was offered to work for The Underground Music Showcase Festival to do the same thing. After the interview I requested a media pass to cover UMS Fest. He said yes and even invited me to UMS Fest press party. Kim and I recently went and we had a blast! There was free beer, pizza, and Brent Cowles performed a fantastic set. I met a lot of people that worked for Westword, The Denver Post, and other media outlets. This radio journey has been a dream come true and it's just getting started.

I talked to Tobias more in email and he got me in contact with a guy from Westword about reviewing Westword Music Showcase Festival. I got a media pass and had the honor of reviewing the festival. It was fantastic! I got to see Kitty Crimes, Slow Caves, Wheel Chair Sports Camp, Cut Copy, and more. I even had the pleasure of interviewing Slow Caves before their performance. I attached the audio to my radio show and played the other bands that played on my show as well. I also wrote and article about my experience at the showcase and had a photographer named Nikolia Puc' from MET Media come out to take photos for my write up. I am now eagerly excited about reviewing The Underground Music Showcase Festival later this month. This opportunity has gone much further than I ever anticipated and I couldn't be anymore happy with the way it's going.

Tune in live to The Shaky Experience, Monday 1-2pm MST.

Baltimore, here I come!

I will be back in my home town of Baltimore, Maryland July 20th - 26th. I will be attending the annual Artscape Festival. It is the biggest weekend in the city every year. Lots of my friends bands are performing it this year such as:

Bloomer, Them Animals, Scroll Downers, Wing Dam, Natural Velvet, Raindeer, PLRLS, Gogol Bordello (I don't know them)

I feel it was imperative that I play the week/end as well. My friends and I setup a show the night before the festival at Joe Squared. The lineup is Pelvis Presley, Knifecrime, Domino, Real Dom, and Terror Pigeon. I couldn't be anymore excited to see all the great bands that are playing and to be apart of such a great weekend.

The Baltimore band that is closing out Artscape, PLRLS' bass player reached out to me thanking me for playing them on my radio show. It was a special treat to have someone thank me for playing their music on my show. It's also worth noting the person that thanked me, Elena use to be a star on the television series Ace Of Cakes. I found that very cool and am happy to play any bands that are requested on my show (especially Baltimore bands).

Lastly, it's worth noting the one year anniversary of The Last Hostel Show Ever was June 17th. That was one of the best nights of my entire life. After working at Hosteling International Baltimore for nearly 3 years and setting up local DIY shows and transforming the hostel into a Baltimore BNote local currency cambio. It meant the world to me to work there and be surrounded by so much culture. I miss the hostel, the shows I hosted, and the people I met everyday. It was an amazing experience.

Miscellaneous:

Kim and I hiked over 4 hours at Rocky Mountain National Park. The views were astonishing and the hike was long, but wonderful. We saw wild animals including beavers, chipmunks, moose, and birds. The chipmunks actually crawled up on my legs looking for food. Kim and I bought our NPS in August of last year for $80. We have used it to nearly it's fullest potential. I highly recommend YOU reader to buy one.

Courtney, Stephanie, Kim, and I all went for a hike to Garden of the Gods recently. It was another beautiful trip. That is the one thing I have a lot of love for Colorado is the nature and hiking. The outdoors world in this state is fantastic. It's the perfect state to spend an entire summer exploring mother nature.

I worked an event as a brand ambassador for a soccer match between Mexico and Jamaica. Before I got to working I was lured over by a Latin television show called Soy La Mala Suerte. They were filming comedy skits for the fans of the soccer match. They offered me $50 in cash to shave my arms on the show. I did it, it was hilarious, and I got paid.

After endless chest pain and breathing issues since March, I decided to try to take a real step in stopping it. I went to the ER about 5 times this year, urgent care more times than I can count and they were never able to give me a legit answer as to why I feel the pain. I got all the tests done and everything came back normal. I was recommended going to specialist such as a cardiologist and pulmonary doctor and they said I was fine. I started to finally accept it's anxiety. Although, it's terrifying and the pain is very real it's not life threatening because I'm still alive and have been focusing my attention on reading about the pain and going to a weekly meditation at a place called Kadampa Mediation Center Colorado. It's been helping and I encourage anyone going through anxiety symptoms to think outside the box. It's the only way to beat panic.

I played in an old pre - school building turned into a DIY artist house. This was my first official Pelvis Presley show in Denver. It was rad being surrounded by people involved in the DIY scene. I played nearly a 10 song set list to open the show for The Black Gloves, Nic & The Narwhals, and Fast Eddy. Although Denver's DIY scene completely got shut down, the pre - school is helping it comeback.

M U S I C

Cut Copy released a new single called "Airborne". The song has a similar feel to their previous hit "Take Me Over", It's very tropical and beach sounding. I love the reverb and the weird sound effects on the track. When I saw them at Westword Music Showcase they played this song and put on the best performance of the entire festival. It was my 3rd time seeing them live. No album information was released for the album yet, but I love what I'm hearing so far and except what's to come next to be great,

The Killers, I've never been a huge Killers fan, but they have kind have always been there. I'll listen to their tunes and enjoy them sometimes. Although, I never really loved them, I definitely love their new single "The Man". I think it's been something they've been waiting for their entire career. It has the perfect funky bass, the lyrics, and attitude of the song makes it a lot of fun.I watched a live video of their other song "Run For Cover" and I'm really digging that as well. No album information has been released other than that, but definitely be sure to give it a listen when it does hit. I have very high expectations for it.

Phoenix - I had the absolute pleasure seeing them for the second time at Red Rocks earlier this summer. They put on such a great performance! The stage floor lit up in a disco like vibe. The band played a great set and the vocalist came out to the crowd during two songs. The whole show was great and a lot of fun. They have a new album out called Ti Amore and I am 50/50 on the album. It's not my favorite, but I don't think they were trying to make it a favorite. It's more of an album of experimental. I think I read somewhere they were trying to focus on an Italian Disco approach. Although, there are hits on the album like "J-Boy" and "Role Models" that makes the album great. I just don't feel completely consumed by the whole album.

The Drums - they have released a new album called "Abysmal Thoughts". This is the first album without any original band mates besides Johnny Pierce. There are lots of great songs on the album including "Blood Under My Belt", "Mirror", "Rich Kids". These songs give me the old The Drums feel to it. It has the classic bass lines were use to hearing from them and a touch of The Smiths vibe. Although, the other songs on the album are just kind of bland. I think the album is good, but not great. I'm still exciting to see them an their opener Methyl Ethel in November
